Muslims and mosques in Indonesia

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population of any country. The Ministry of Home Affairs' civil registry for 2025 lists 251,257,898 Muslims, 87.15% of the population, and in 2022 the Ministry of Religious Affairs found the share highest in Aceh at 98.61% and in Java at 96.04%, while Bali, where Hindus are the majority, is 10.1% Muslim. Islam spread gradually from the 12th and 13th centuries through trade, Sufi teachers and local courts: the first recorded conversions in northern Sumatra date from 1111, and the earliest dated evidence of a Muslim dynasty there is a gravestone from 1297. Almost all Indonesian Muslims follow the Shafi'i school, and the Islam of the archipelago grew together with local culture and the pesantren tradition.

Two mass organisations shape religious life. Nahdlatul Ulama, founded in 1926, claims between 40 and 60 million followers and represents the traditionalist pesantren (Islamic boarding school) world, and Muhammadiyah, founded in 1912, has about 29 million followers and runs thousands of schools and hospitals in a reformist tradition. Together they speak for about 60% of Indonesian Muslims. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issues fatwas, including on halal certification, and Aceh is the one province allowed to apply Sharia regulations. Jakarta's Istiqlal Mosque, completed in 1978, is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia's calendar is the best known example of a country where bodies calculate differently. The Ministry of Religious Affairs holds a sidang isbat, a meeting that combines calculation (hisab) with reports of the crescent sighted from locations across the archipelago, before it announces Ramadan and Eid. Since the ministers of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (MABIMS) approved new criteria on 8 December 2021, the ministry expects a crescent altitude of 3 degrees and an elongation of 6.4 degrees. Muhammadiyah uses its own hisab hakiki wujudul hilal method, which sometimes gives an earlier start, so Muslims in the same city may begin Ramadan or celebrate Eid on different days, and the government announces its date after the sidang isbat.

The equator crosses Indonesia, so the day length changes little during the year: Fajr, Maghrib and Isha move by only a few minutes between seasons, which is very different from Europe. The country spans three time zones, WIB (UTC+7), WITA (UTC+8) and WIT (UTC+9), and the sun rises almost three hours earlier in Jayapura in Papua than in Medan in Sumatra, a gap that the three zones only partly hide. Times here follow the method of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), with its small safety margin of a few minutes, and the congregation times of each mosque are set locally.

Prayer times in Indonesia: common questions

How many cities in Indonesia does Awqatly cover?

448 cities and towns in Indonesia. Every one has its own page with today's prayer times, the next prayer, a monthly timetable and the qibla direction.

How are prayer times calculated in Indonesia?

For each city we use its own latitude, longitude and time zone with the Kemenag (Indonesia) method (Fajr 20°, Isha 18°) and Standard Asr. These are the astronomical start times of each prayer.

Which Asr time does Indonesia use?

We show Standard Asr first for Indonesia, and every city page also shows the other school so you can choose. The difference is the length of the shadow that marks the start of Asr.

Do the times change during the year in Indonesia?

Yes. The sun's path shifts every day, so every prayer moves a little daily. The gap between Fajr and Maghrib is longest in summer and shortest in winter, and more so the further a city is from the equator.

Are these times the same as my local mosque's timetable?

These are the start times of each prayer. Mosques publish congregation (jamaat) times, usually a few minutes to an hour later, and some add safety minutes. We do not publish congregation times, so check with your mosque.

How do I find the prayer times for my city in Indonesia?

Choose your city from the lists on this page, search for it, or allow your location on the home page. A city page shows today's times, a monthly timetable, the qibla and the mosques nearby.
