What is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr, also called fitrana or sadaqat al-fitr, is a small charity due at the end of Ramadan. It purifies the fast and gives poor families food for Eid. It is not the same as Zakat on wealth: it does not depend on the Nisab, only on having more than your family needs on the day of Eid.

Who pays, and for whom?

Each Muslim who has more than their family needs on the day of Eid pays it for themselves and for the people they support, children included.

When is it due?

It becomes due at sunset at the end of Ramadan and should be given before the Eid prayer. Most scholars allow paying a day or two earlier. Given after the prayer, it counts as ordinary charity.

How much is it?

The measure is one sa' of staple food. Its weight depends on the grain and the scholar, so the calculator uses the commonly quoted figures: about 3 kg in the Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali and Jafari schools, and in the Hanafi school 1.633 kg of wheat (half a sa') or 3.266 kg of dates, raisins or barley.

Food or money?

The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools classically say to give food. The Hanafi school allows its value in money, and so do the Jafari rulings of Sayyid Sistani; many scholars and charities now accept money too. Ask your scholar if you are unsure.
