Aceh has the highest share of Muslims of any Indonesian province, 98.61% of 5,432,312 people according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2022, and the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh is its symbol. The original Masjid Raya was built in 1612 under Sultan Iskandar Muda, although some sources date it to 1292. In the First Aceh Expedition of the Dutch, Acehnese fighters attacked Dutch troops from the mosque, and a fire started when flares hit its thatched roof. The Dutch colonial administration rebuilt it, starting in 1879 and finishing on 27 December 1881, to a design by Gerrit Bruins in Mughal revival style adapted by L.P. Luijks.
The mosque was extended in 1935, 1958 and 1982: it began with one dome and one minaret and now has seven domes and eight minarets, with a stated capacity of 30,000. It is described as a symbol of religion, culture, spirit, strength, struggle and nationalism for the Acehnese. In December 2004 it survived the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami with minor damage, although the earthquake tilted its 35-metre minaret, and it sheltered displaced people before it reopened for prayers after two weeks.
Aceh is the one Indonesian province that applies Sharia regulations. For prayer times, Banda Aceh lies about 5.6 degrees north at the western tip of Sumatra and uses Western Indonesia Time, WIB, UTC+7.
