Salah times Surabaya: calculation method and Asr

Method: Kemenag (Indonesia). Asr: Standard.

Times follow Kemenag's method (Fajr 20°, Isha 18°, 2 to 3 minutes of ihtiyat). They match Kemenag's jadwal sholat to within a minute. Kemenag also corrects for a place's height above sea level, which we do not, so a mountain town can differ a little more.

Surabaya does not change its clocks; times stay on Asia/Jakarta all year. How times are calculated

Surabaya, the Sun and the clock

Surabaya is the main city of East Java, home to about 3,000,000 people. Surabaya lies 7.8° east of the 105° E meridian that its time zone is based on, so the Sun is highest about 31 minutes before 12:00 on average, around 11:29, and Dhuhr comes earlier than the clock suggests.

Surabaya lies within the tropics. Around 3 March and 12 October the Sun passes straight overhead at Dhuhr, and upright objects cast almost no shadow at noon. Day length hardly changes in Surabaya, from 11h 42m to 12h 33m through the year, so prayer times move only a little from season to season. As Surabaya is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.

Maghrib time Surabaya compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Surabaya, calculated with the same method.

The Muslim community in Surabaya

The Al-Akbar National Mosque, beside the Surabaya–Gempol Highway, is the second-largest mosque in Indonesia by capacity, after the Istiqlal in Jakarta. Groundbreaking was on 4 August 1995, work stopped during the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and resumed in 1999, and the mosque was completed in 2000 and inaugurated on 10 November 2000. A team from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology designed it. The building is 147 metres long and 128 metres wide on a site of 22,300 square metres, the main dome is about 27 metres high and is accompanied by four small blue domes, and the mihrab is said to be the largest in Indonesia.

The minaret is 99 metres tall, an echo of the 99 names of Allah. The mosque holds up to 59,000 worshippers. Surabaya is the capital of East Java, a province where Muslims are the great majority, and across Java as a whole the Ministry of Religious Affairs counted 96.04% of the population as Muslim in 2022. Most Muslims follow the Shafi'i school, and two mass organisations, Nahdlatul Ulama (founded in 1926 and claiming between 40 and 60 million followers) and Muhammadiyah (founded in 1912, about 29 million followers), shape religious life.

For prayer times, Surabaya lies about 7 degrees south of the equator and uses Western Indonesia Time, WIB, UTC+7. On this site's calculation the fast from Fajr to Maghrib in Surabaya lasts about 13 hours on 21 June and 14 hours on 21 December. The day length hardly changes during the year, so Fajr, Maghrib and Isha move by only a few minutes between seasons. Times here follow the method of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with its small safety margin, and the congregation times of each mosque are set locally.
