Clocks change on 24 April and 29 October. Prayer times on those days shift by an hour on the clock, not in the sky. How times are calculated

Assiut, the Sun and the clock

Assiut is the main city of Asyut, home to about 530,000 people. Assiut lies 1.2° east of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on, so the Sun is highest about 5 minutes before 12:00 on average, around 11:55, and Dhuhr comes earlier than the clock suggests. In summer, when the clocks go forward an hour, that moment moves to around 12:55.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Assiut: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 86° above the horizon in June and only 39° in December, so noon shadows are much longer in December. Days in Assiut range from 10h 25m in December to 13h 51m in June, a difference of 3h 26m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them.

Maghrib time Assiut compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Assiut, calculated with the same method.
