New Brighton, the Sun and the clock

New Brighton is in Eastern Cape and has about 48,000 people. The nearest larger city is Gqeberha, 7 km to the south. New Brighton lies 4.4° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 18 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:18, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in New Brighton: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 80° above the horizon in December and only 33° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in New Brighton range from 9h 54m in June to 14h 25m in December, a difference of 4h 31m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As New Brighton is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.

Maghrib time New Brighton compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with New Brighton, calculated with the same method.
