Despatch does not change its clocks; times stay on Africa/Johannesburg all year. How times are calculated

Despatch, the Sun and the clock

Despatch is in Eastern Cape and has about 40,000 people. The nearest larger city is Kariega, 8 km to the northwest. Despatch lies 4.5° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 18 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:18, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Despatch: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 80° above the horizon in December and only 33° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in Despatch range from 9h 54m in June to 14h 24m in December, a difference of 4h 30m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As Despatch is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.
