Vereeniging does not change its clocks; times stay on Africa/Johannesburg all year. How times are calculated

Vereeniging, the Sun and the clock

Vereeniging is in Gauteng and has about 470,000 people. The nearest larger city is Soweto, 46 km to the north. Vereeniging lies 2.1° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 8 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:08, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Vereeniging: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 87° above the horizon in December and only 40° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in Vereeniging range from 10h 28m in June to 13h 49m in December, a difference of 3h 21m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As Vereeniging is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then. At 1,445 m above sea level, Vereeniging sits on high ground. Times are calculated for a level horizon; from a hilltop or a tall building sunrise can come a little earlier and sunset a little later than listed, while mountains to the east or west do the opposite.

Maghrib time Vereeniging compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Vereeniging, calculated with the same method.
