Port Alfred, the Sun and the clock

Port Alfred is in Eastern Cape and has about 31,000 people. The nearest larger city is Grahamstown, 45 km to the northwest. Port Alfred lies 3.1° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 12 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:12, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Port Alfred: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 80° above the horizon in December and only 33° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in Port Alfred range from 9h 55m in June to 14h 23m in December, a difference of 4h 28m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As Port Alfred is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.

Maghrib time Port Alfred compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Port Alfred, calculated with the same method.
