Across 2026, Fajr in Cape Town moves between 03:45 and 06:23, and Maghrib between 17:44 and 20:01. The longest fasting day, dawn to sunset, is 16h 10m on 19 December; the shortest is 11h 23m on 17 June.
Cape Town does not change its clocks; times stay on Africa/Johannesburg all year. How times are calculated
Cape Town is the main city of Western Cape, home to about 4,800,000 people. Cape Town lies 11.6° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 46 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:46, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.
The Sun never stands straight overhead in Cape Town: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 80° above the horizon in December and only 33° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in Cape Town range from 9h 53m in June to 14h 25m in December, a difference of 4h 32m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As Cape Town is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.
Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Cape Town, calculated with the same method.

Get Awqatly for Windows (free)The Auwal Mosque in the Bo-Kaap was completed in 1794 and was the first mosque established in South Africa. It was built during the first British occupation of the Cape on land that belonged to Coridon van Ceylon, a freed Black Muslim slave, and his daughter Saartjie van de Kaap donated the property, which had been used as a warehouse. It is described as the first mosque to observe public prayers. The first imam was Qadi Abdussalam, known as Tuan Guru, who wrote the entire Quran from memory while imprisoned as a political prisoner, and that Quran is displayed at the mosque. He also used the mosque as a madrasa.
After his death Achmad of Bengal became imam, and his family held the position until Gasan Achmat died in 1980. In 1807 a dispute over the next imam led part of the congregation to form the Palm Tree Mosque on Long Street. The mosque was renovated in 1907 and extensively in 1936. Cape Town's Muslim history goes back further: free Muslim labourers called Mardyckers came in 1658, and Sheikh Yusuf of Makassar was exiled to the Cape in 1694. The Muslim Judicial Council, founded in 1945, provides halaal certification, and the Shafi'i school predominates in the Western Cape.
For prayer times, Cape Town lies at 33.9 degrees south, so the seasons are the reverse of Europe's. On this site's calculation the fast from Fajr to Maghrib in Cape Town lasts about 11 and a half hours on 21 June and 16 hours on 21 December. South Africa keeps one time zone, UTC+2, with no daylight saving, and Cape Town lies further west than Johannesburg, so its sun rises and sets later by the clock. This site shows the Standard (Shafi'i) Asr time first in the Western Cape, following the local school. Moon sighting is done locally and by councils, and each mosque sets its own congregation times.
