Butterworth, the Sun and the clock

Butterworth is in Eastern Cape and has about 53,000 people. The nearest larger city is Bhisho, 88 km to the southwest. Butterworth lies 1.9° west of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 7 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:07, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Butterworth: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 81° above the horizon in December and only 34° in June, so noon shadows are much longer in June. Days in Butterworth range from 10h 2m in June to 14h 16m in December, a difference of 4h 14m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them. As Butterworth is in the southern hemisphere, its longest days come in December and January, and so do its longest fasts whenever Ramadan falls then.

Maghrib time Butterworth compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Butterworth, calculated with the same method.
