Lagos does not change its clocks; times stay on Africa/Lagos all year. How times are calculated

Lagos, the Sun and the clock

Lagos is in Lagos and has about 15,000,000 people. Lagos lies 11.6° west of the 15° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 46 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:46, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

Lagos lies within the tropics. Around 7 April and 7 September the Sun passes straight overhead at Dhuhr, and upright objects cast almost no shadow at noon. Day length hardly changes in Lagos, from 11h 45m to 12h 30m through the year, so prayer times move only a little from season to season.

Maghrib time Lagos compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Lagos, calculated with the same method.

The Muslim community in Lagos

Lagos lies in the south-west, where the Nigeria page says Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun have Muslim majorities, but the pages opened for this text give no figure for the share of Muslims in the city or in Lagos State. Wikipedia lists 8,048,430 people for metropolitan Lagos in the 2006 census and a Lagos State Government estimate of 17,803,700 for 2025. The Yoruba predominate, the settlement on Lagos Island was founded by the Awori, a Yoruba subgroup, in the 15th century, and all Nigerian ethnic groups are found in the city. Islam and Christianity are the dominant religions in the state, and non-native residents include Hausa, Igbo, Edo, Efik, Fulani, Nupe and others.

Islam reached Yoruba towns through itinerant traders and spread widely in the 18th and 19th centuries; a list of early mosques gives Lagos the year 1774, and Oba Kosoko gave the faith royal support after returning from exile in Epe, with no year stated. The Shitta-Bey Mosque on Martins Ereko Street, financed by the businessman Mohammed Shitta Bey and supervised by the Brazilian architect Joao Baptista da Costa, was completed on 7 February 1892 and opened on 4 July 1894 in Afro-Brazilian style. It was designated a National Monument in 2013. The Lagos Central Mosque was opened on 28 May 1988 by President Babangida to replace an older mosque that was demolished in 1983; its prayer hall measures 750 square metres. In 2014 a court upheld a ban on the hijab in Lagos State schools, and in 2016 it was overturned as discriminatory against Muslim pupils.

For prayer times, Lagos lies at 6.5 degrees north and keeps West Africa Time, UTC+1, without daylight saving. On this site's calculation the fast from Fajr to Maghrib in Lagos lasts about 14 hours on 21 June and 13 hours on 21 December. The day length changes little through the year, so Fajr, Maghrib and Isha move by only a few minutes between seasons. The Nigeria page describes how the Sultan of Sokoto usually announces Ramadan and Eid after reports from moon-sighting committees. The congregation times are set by each mosque.
