Kano, the Sun and the clock
Kano is the main city of Kano State, home to about 4,900,000 people. Kano lies 6.5° west of the 15° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 26 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:26, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

Kano is the main city of northern Nigeria's Hausa heartland. Wikipedia gives 2,828,861 residents for the city in the 2006 census and a 2022 estimate of 4,103,000, and the 2006 census recorded 9,401,288 people in Kano State, the most populous state at the time. The principal inhabitants of the city are the Hausa and Fulani, with historic Arab, Tuareg and Kanuri communities. The pages opened give no Muslim share for the city, only that its places of worship are predominantly mosques, and that Kano State operates under Sharia law within the Nigerian constitution, introduced in the early 2000s.
Islam came to Kano in the 11th century or earlier through trans-Saharan trade. In the 12th century Ali Yaji gave up the cult of Tsumburbura and converted, and Muhammad Rumfa, who reigned from 1463 to 1499, encouraged residents to convert and invited scholars to the city. The Great Mosque of Kano was built for Rumfa in the 15th century and is described as the oldest mosque in Nigeria; Muhammad Zaki moved it to a new site in 1582, Abdullahi Dan Dabo rebuilt it in the mid-19th century, and it was destroyed in the 1950s and rebuilt with British sponsorship. It has seven domes and two minarets. The Kano Emirate was formed in 1805 during the Fulani jihad, became part of the Sokoto Caliphate, and its institutions continued as the Kano Emirate Council after the British took over in 1903. Muhammad Sanusi II has been emir since 2024. In December 1980 followers of the preacher Maitatsine attacked worshippers at the Great Mosque.
