Midar, the Sun and the clock

Midar is in Oriental and has about 16,000 people. The nearest larger city is Al Aaroui, 48 km to the east. Midar lies 18.5° west of the 15° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 74 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 13:14, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

The Sun never stands straight overhead in Midar: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 78° above the horizon in June and only 32° in December, so noon shadows are much longer in December. Days in Midar range from 9h 48m in December to 14h 30m in June, a difference of 4h 42m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them.

Maghrib time Midar compared with nearby cities

Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Midar, calculated with the same method.
