The Kapitan Keling Mosque, at the corner of Buckingham Street and Pitt Street in George Town, Penang, was built by Indian Muslim traders and completed in 1801. Its founder and the leader of the Chulias was Cauder Mohuddeen Merican. In 1801 Sir George Leith, the Lieutenant Governor of Penang, appointed him Captain of the South Indian 'Keling' community and granted land for the mosque, and he became known as Kapitan Kling, which gave the mosque its name.
The architecture is Islamic, Mughal and Moorish, and geometric designs decorate the façade and interior. A renovation in 1930 enlarged the building, doubled the height of the central prayer hall and improved the ventilation and natural light. The mosque is part of the George Town World Heritage Site. Penang is one of the Malaysian states with its own religious department. In Malaysia Islam is the religion of the Federation under Article 3(1) of the Constitution, 63.5% of people were Muslim in the 2020 census, and the Shafi'i school of Sunni jurisprudence is predominant.
