Delhi does not change its clocks; times stay on Asia/Kolkata all year. How times are calculated
Delhi is the main city of Delhi, home to about 11,000,000 people. Delhi lies 5.3° west of the 82.5° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 21 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:21, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.
The Sun never stands straight overhead in Delhi: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 85° above the horizon in June and only 38° in December, so noon shadows are much longer in December. Days in Delhi range from 10h 19m in December to 13h 58m in June, a difference of 3h 39m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them.
Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Delhi, calculated with the same method.

Get Awqatly for Windows (free)The Jama Masjid, also called Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa, is the principal mosque of Delhi. It stands in Old Delhi, in the walled city of Shahjahanabad, across from the Red Fort, and was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656 (the article gives 1644 to 1656 in its introduction), by about 5,000 workers at a cost of one million rupees. It is built mainly of red sandstone and white marble with black marble decoration, and its courtyard holds 25,000 worshippers. It has three marble domes and two sandstone minarets, each 41 metres high.
The first imam, Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari, inaugurated the mosque on 23 July 1656, and his Bukhari descendants have traditionally held the title of Shahi Imam. After the British retook Delhi in 1857 they barred the mosque from worship and used it as barracks, and a nearby imperial college, dispensary and madrasa were destroyed. It was returned to the Muslims in 1862 under conditions, including that it be used strictly as a religious site. Today Muslims gather there for Friday prayers and for festivals such as Eid.
Delhi is also where moon-sighting announcements are watched. In 2026 India's central committee announced a sighting in New Delhi, so that Ramadan began on 19 February, a day after many Gulf countries, and in 2024 the imams of the Jama Masjid and the Fatehpuri mosque said the Shawwal moon had not been sighted, so Eid fell on a Thursday in India. For prayer times, Delhi lies at 28.6 degrees north and India uses Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30. On this site's calculation the fast from Fajr to Maghrib in Delhi lasts about 15 and a half hours on 21 June and 11 and a half hours on 21 December. Most mosques use the Karachi angles of 18 degrees with the Hanafi Asr, and congregation times are set by each mosque.
