Chennai, the Sun and the clock

Chennai is the main city of Tamil Nadu, home to about 4,700,000 people. Chennai lies 2.2° west of the 82.5° E meridian that its time zone is based on. The Sun therefore reaches its highest point about 9 minutes after 12:00 on average, around 12:09, and Dhuhr comes later than the clock suggests.

Chennai lies within the tropics. Around 25 April and 19 August the Sun passes straight overhead at Dhuhr, and upright objects cast almost no shadow at noon. Days in Chennai range from 11h 21m in December to 12h 54m in June, a difference of 1h 33m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them.

Maghrib time Chennai compared with nearby cities
