Across 2026, Fajr in Cairo moves between 03:47 and 05:39, and Maghrib between 16:55 and 20:00. The longest fasting day, dawn to sunset, is 15h 52m on 22 June; the shortest is 11h 45m on 19 December.
Clocks change on 24 April and 29 October. Prayer times on those days shift by an hour on the clock, not in the sky. How times are calculated
Cairo is the capital, home to about 9,600,000 people. Cairo lies 1.2° east of the 30° E meridian that its time zone is based on, so the Sun is highest about 5 minutes before 12:00 on average, around 11:55, and Dhuhr comes earlier than the clock suggests. In summer, when the clocks go forward an hour, that moment moves to around 12:55.
The Sun never stands straight overhead in Cairo: at Dhuhr it climbs to about 83° above the horizon in June and only 36° in December, so noon shadows are much longer in December. Days in Cairo range from 10h 12m in December to 14h 5m in June, a difference of 3h 53m, and Fajr, Maghrib and Isha shift with them.
Prayer times shift with longitude: about 4 minutes for every degree east or west. Here is how today's Fajr and Maghrib in nearby places compare with Cairo, calculated with the same method.

Get Awqatly for Windows (free)Cairo is called the city of a thousand minarets, and two mosques show its age. The Mosque of Ibn Tulun was built between 876 and 879 CE for Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868 to 884. It is the oldest well-preserved mosque in Egypt and the oldest to keep largely its original form, and with its outer enclosure it covers 26,318 square metres. It follows the Abbasid architecture of Samarra, with a spacious central courtyard surrounded by roofed halls with pointed arches, and a minaret with an external spiral staircase that was probably inspired by the spiral minarets of Samarra. Sultan Lajin carried out a major restoration in 1296, the present fountain and its dome dating from that work, and a full restoration from 2002 to 2004 cost 2.5 million dollars. It is part of Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Al-Azhar's mosque, built around 971, is the centre of Sunni learning. The institution, a mosque and a university in one, trains scholars from across the Muslim world, and since 1961, under Gamal Abdel Nasser, it has been tied to the state. Dar al-Ifta, the office of the Grand Mufti, is part of the Ministry of Justice and announces the start of each Hijri month after a crescent sighting; its monthly statements are the source this site uses for Egypt's month starts. Cairo's popular Islam is just as visible: the Hussein moulid in Cairo draws over a million people, and Egypt has 74 Sufi orders.
For prayer times, Cairo lies at 30 degrees north. Egypt brought back daylight saving time in 2023, so the clocks move forward in spring and back in autumn. On this site's calculation the fast from Fajr to Maghrib in Cairo lasts about 16 hours on 21 June and 12 hours on 21 December. Times here follow the Egyptian General Authority of Survey angles, which are widely used across the Arab world, and congregation times are set by each mosque.
