How the Hijri date is worked out
The Islamic calendar counts years from the Hijrah, the Prophet's migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Each month begins with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar predicts this astronomically and is the one shown here; many communities begin Ramadan and the Eids by sighting the moon locally, so their dates can differ by a day.
Islamic date: common questions
Why is the Islamic date different from what my mosque says?
Some communities start each month by local moon sighting, others follow Saudi Arabia or a calculated calendar. The difference is almost always one day.
When does the Islamic day begin?
At sunset (Maghrib). The evening before a Gregorian day already belongs to the next Hijri date, which is why Ramadan's first tarawih prayer is the night before the first fast.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
354 or 355 days, about 11 days fewer than a solar year, so Ramadan and the Eids come about 11 days earlier each year.
