About and methodology
How prayer times, qibla and dates on this site are calculated, and where the data comes from.
Who is behind Awqatly
Awqatly is created and run by Dr. Muhammad Awais Yousaf, Associate Professor. It is built to give Muslims a clear and accurate place to check prayer times, the qibla and nearby mosques for any city, with the calculation method always shown openly so anyone can check how each time is worked out.

How prayer times are calculated
Want the full mathematics? Read How prayer times are calculated: solar declination, the hour-angle equation, the Asr shadow rule, high-latitude rules and the qibla formula, with a live worked example.
Every time on this site is computed from astronomy with the open-source adhan library, for the city's exact coordinates and in its own time zone, including daylight saving changes. Fajr and Isha are defined by how far the sun is below the horizon (the twilight angle), Dhuhr by solar noon, Maghrib by sunset, and Asr by the length of an object's shadow.

Every city page shows both Asr times — Standard (Shafi, Maliki, Hanbali: shadow equals the object's length) and Hanafi (twice the length) — and lets you switch to any of 13 methods. Your choice is saved on your device only.
High latitudes
Above 48° latitude the sky may never get fully dark in summer, so the twilight angles for Fajr and Isha are never reached. For those places we apply the seventh-of-the-night rule: Fajr starts no earlier than the last seventh of the night and Isha no later than the first seventh. Below 48° the middle-of-the-night rule is the safeguard. The Moonsighting Committee method used in the UK has its own seasonal adjustment.
Qibla
The qibla is the initial great-circle bearing to the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E), measured clockwise from true north: atan2(sin ΔL, cos φ·tan φK − sin φ·cos ΔL). Distance uses the haversine formula with an Earth radius of 6,371 km. Phone compasses read magnetic north; most phones correct to true north automatically.
Hijri dates and Ramadan
Hijri dates use the Umm al-Qura calendar. Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on 2027-02-08; that date is an expectation and is always subject to local moon sighting.
Congregation times
We publish calculated prayer start times only. Jamaat and Jummah times are set by each mosque, and we never guess them. Mosque managers can claim their page to add them.
