    How to get an accurate qibla reading
    1. Take off magnetic phone cases and stand away from cars, steel desks, speakers and power cables.
    2. Calibrate first: move the phone slowly in a figure-eight three or four times.
    3. Hold the phone flat and watch the bubble; when it is centred the reading is steadiest.
    4. Use the Sun check on a clear day. It corrects both the phone's error and the difference between magnetic and true north.
    5. Turn your whole body, not just the phone, until the gold arrow points to the top and the dial glows.

    Which way is the qibla?

    The qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E), measured clockwise from true north along the shortest path over the Earth. It is 119° from London, 58° from New York, 268° from Karachi and 277° from Sydney. Use your location above for your exact bearing.

    How the qibla finder works

    The Earth is a sphere, so the qibla is not found by drawing a straight line on a flat map. We compute the great-circle bearing from your coordinates to the Kaaba: the initial direction of the shortest route over the globe. That is why the qibla from North America points north-east, over the Atlantic and Europe, even though Makkah looks south-east on a flat map. The bearing is exact to a tenth of a degree for the coordinates you give.

    Using your phone as a qibla compass

    1. Share your location, or search your city, so the finder knows where you are.
    2. Tap “Use my phone compass”. On iPhone, allow motion and orientation access when asked.
    3. Hold the phone flat and centre the bubble in the small level.
    4. Turn your whole body until the gold arrow points to the top mark. The dial glows, the phone vibrates and a chime sounds when you face the qibla.
    5. If the accuracy reads more than ±15°, move away from metal and make a figure-eight with the phone, or use the Sun check.

    Finding the qibla without a compass

    Twice a year the Sun passes directly over the Kaaba, around 27–28 May at 12:18 and 15–16 July at 12:27 Makkah time (09:18 and 09:27 UTC). At those moments, anywhere the Sun is up, shadows point directly away from the qibla.     Qibla finder: common questions

    Is the qibla east?

    Only from some places. From the UK and most of Europe it is south-east, from North America north-east, from Pakistan and India west, and from Australia west-north-west. Always use the bearing for your own location.

    How accurate is a phone qibla compass?

    Usually within 5 to 10 degrees once calibrated. Magnetic cases, steel furniture and electronics can pull it further, and phone compasses sense magnetic north rather than true north. The Sun check on this page corrects both.

    Do I need an app to find the qibla?

    No. This qibla finder works in your phone's browser with its built-in compass and gyroscope, and nothing is installed. Your location stays on your device.

    What if I pray in a slightly wrong direction?

    Scholars agree that facing the general direction of the Kaaba is what is required when its exact position cannot be seen, and a prayer offered after an honest effort to find the qibla is valid.
